Found it, the problem is that the short gear change cable is damaged where the inner goes in to the outer at the lever end.
What a faff changing a gear cable is.
And having a TF cable and a F adds to the fun.
Luckily I have a TF135 gearbox in my garage that will be donating the bracket so I can use the shorter cable.

No, when my clutch arm seized and the clutch slave blew I got the car home by doing clutchless gear changes which was okay until I actually got home. The only way I can get the F in my pathetic drive is to park side ways which requires a couple of shuffles and the only way to do that without control of the clutch is to use the starter motor to move the car. I had to switch off, select the correct gear and operate the starter.
Unfortunately the car became stuck in gear and no shoving or yanking got it back into neutral. I think that during this I managed to kink the end of the outer so that the inner cable would only move between 1st, 3rd, 5th and neutral.

All should go well with your MG for a while, since you've made a blood sacrifice to appease the MG gods! :drive:

Posted 4 years 9 months ago #192441So I did what I have done in the past, rested a open ended spanner on the cable end, close to the ball socket and tapped with a hammer. Today it took three or four taps but what really surprised me was the sound as they parted ways, the end dropped into the well!
The darn cable end had snapped!

Posted 4 years 9 months ago #192473I got the new cable into the car and attached to the lever but failing light (my beanie hat with built in LED torch) meant I didn't get it bolted in.
