Removed the gearbox today.
The release arm baering looks o.k.

MAYBE the clutch plate is mounted the wrong way round, as my mechanic suggested.
See photo.

Will remove the basket the next days, having to go to work now (night shift at hospital).
Regards
Christof

Christof. Make sure that the bearing carrier bolt is tight on the shaft and not allowing the shaft to swivel within the carrier . The plate will / should be marked as to which way round it fits .

Thank you, John.
The bolt is very tight, as I remind from mounting it. The thread on the uprated release arm was not the original size, I used some force to fix the bolt.
A guy from the German mgboard said the clutch plate is the wrong way round from my photo.
Awkward! How silly can someone be!
Will check it tomorrow. Looking forward on driving her this year in the summer.

Removed the clutch basket and clutch plate.
On the inside of the clutch plate there's printed Flywheel Side.

For comparison the other side:

Ok , so the flywheel side of the plate was against the flywheel in other words the clutch assembly was fitted the right way round. In previous posts you have said that the clutch arm, when the engine and gear box were still in the car was moving when the pedal was pressed . It is a bit of a puzzle this . Refitting the engine and box is a bit of a risk as you haven't found the problem . Is there a problem inside the gear box ( no drive ) ? Really difficult to advise where to go next . :nonod:

@G0RSQ: Will take another photo tomorrow.
@sworkscooper: the gearbox worked o.k. all the time. And yes, the plate was mounted the right way round.
The german mgboard tries to help me, too. The Borg & Beck number 494916 wasn't to be found on the www. Maybe the wrong one? The clutch plate (and the basket aswell) fitted neatly. So I recently contacted Borg & Beck via mail, need to await the answer.
I've also measured the diameter of the clutch plate, it's not the 200mm one of the 1.6 engine.
Thank you all!

Next step in enquries:
Searched for the clutch set bill from last year. There it was named as HK 9012 BORG & BECK CLUTCH KIT Rover/MG Rover 200,400,MGF.
Research and comparison on www found the part number for this kit was URF 000121. At Rimmers there's only the URF 000122 listed.
So I was nearly certain to have got the wrong clutch kit!
But the German guys say the ...121 had been changed to ...122 and means the same set.
The plan is now to lift the complete gearbox and clutch into our family cars boot and carry it to the garage.
I'm at a loss now.

Got all the gearbox and clutch set to the garage. The MG-specialist checked the gearbox, seems to be o.k. But at the clutch basket he found some discolorations (see pictures). His opinion: cheap scrap. He only uses Sachs or LUK clutch sets.
Ordered one already.

Add to the quality clutch list Borg and Beck . Do you still have the receipt / bill for the clutch you bought so you can return the kit for a refund if another clutch kit fixes the fault ?
