Is it a fair rule of thumb that tfs are better fillers than fs & by fitting a pipe off a later tf all the frustration will evaporate?

The filler pipes are essentially the same, if there is another problem with filling then the issue can be the rubber concertina hose between the filler pipe and the tank is twisted and constricting the flow of fuel into the tank.

It's possible my F has a later filler pipe as it is a mk2. So maybe you have found the problem  But I've never noticed any correlation between year and filling problems before

I think some pumps may deliver at a faster rate, and that it can even vary at the same pump..from day to day.
What's that black canvas thing behind the seats for?

Yes I noticed that on the Rimmers bros site. I presume it is to do with stopping people filling with Diesel, but I don't know why the Japanese one is unrestricted, unless they don't have different sized nozzles.Airportable wrote: Interesting, there are unrestricted filler necks for the Japanese market, which I take to mean that you can stuff in any old nozzle. Is there a difference in unleaded nozzle verses diesel in Canada?
I also noticed that the Japanese ones are less than a third the price!

At the pumps where only cars normally fill up there is no difference in the unleaded nozzle vs diesel, but at the diesel pumps used by commercial vehicles/HGVs the diesel nozzle is substantially larger. Therefore the fill nozzle for a diesel fueled vehicle can accept the larger nozzle. Petro-fuel vehicles here do have the restrictor in the fill nozzle just like they do in England.
I have a few friends that have Japan-export MGFs, I'll ask if their filling nozzle is different; if there is a restrictor or not.
