Any thoughts on the ideal spark plug gap for an mpi TF please running platinum Densos ? Its a 1.6 but presume same rules apply as a 1.8 120 or 135
I'd seen people refer to a standard 1mm gap for all TF's across the board. These Densos have arrived with 0.8 gaps and Ive read the gaps shouldnt be changed on platinum plugs as the gaps are correct when shipped and shouldnt be adjusted for fear of damaging the electrode. Should i live with a 0.8mm gap ?

Don't try to adjust platinum plugs, go with the preset gap.
Any attempt to adjust will damage the platinum coating; same applies to iridium plugs

Thanks David. Just fishing out the last stubborn remnants of disintegrated coil pack insulation from one of the wells then the plugs, new coil packs and leads are going in.

Well that was interesting. Plug number 3 that had been tough to get out due to detritus from the coil pack insulation decided to throw a challenge fitting the new plug. It wouldn't go in beyond a single turn of thread. I tried the old plug again that had just come out with the same result. Not wanting to cross thread it and risk stripping the thread I looked up techniques of thread repair. A thread chaser seemed the best solution but where would I find one when the shops were about to close. A bit of self help was clearly needed. Looking at the way a thread chaser was made gave me an idea. I put one of the old spark plugs in a vice and using a small cutting wheel on a Dremel made 4 cuts accross the threads, from the top of the plug to the bottom of the thread, roughly 90 degrees apart. I then tapered the top of the plug with a small grind wheel, grinding off the two top threads to put a taper on it. I cleaned off the swarf and oiled the thread. Thankfully this wound down without any obstructions this time so i ran my home made thread chaser up and down a few more times, cleaning and oiling each time. The new Denso plug went in fine after that.
Just the slight pain of having to now return and reorder the plug leads as it then became obvious the Ebay seller had sent out vvc ones which have half inch taller plug cap than mpi leads so didn't seal against the top of the plug wells.

That method is often used to chase out threads, and I have even seen a new thread cut by that method as well when starting out as an apprentice too many moons ago. With damaged threads the knack seems not to be too ham fisted and use fingers to screw the mating part in.

I didn't realise it was an established thing to make a thread chaser out of an old spark plug but it worked a treat.
The car runs superbly now. Just been for a blast around town and can't believe how completely differently it drives.
I cant be sure if was changing the plugs or the coil packs that has made all the difference and whether changing the air and fuel filters have contributed but the contrast to when I first got it is remarkable.
