TF TAPPETS
Limited or almost no experience with MGTF engines but I agree with the use of flushing oil first. That worked a miracle on a Vauxhall engine with noisy tappets. It also cleaned out a small Peugeot engine system for us soon after buying a 106 for daughter’s first car.
I’d try that first Len, drain it out whilst hot and re fill with oil of your choice after a filter change.

Hi Len,
the car has been parked for a while now and goodness knows when it was last serviced so I would go with the advice to give the engine a flush before getting into anything more serious.

Good luck Len...
It's almost certainly a gummy tappet after being not run for some time especially as you said the oil was dirty.
Fingers crossed!

i`ve got the engine warm and drained the old oil . I then added 5ltr flushing oil and ran the engine for about 10 to 15 minutes ,within 3 minutes the tappet had gone quiet I`ve now drained the flushing oil out and removed old filter ,just waiting for oil and filter to arrive Thanks for the advice about flushing the engine ,I had doubts as the tappet was so noisy but relief one job less to do

Really pleased for you Len!
Flushing oil has a lot of chemicals that act quickly in removing gum and tar but they are not to be left in.
The car will soon be ready for sale

I have tried to upload a video in the past but without success. My recollection is that, at the time (and this was with the previous version of the forum software), videos were not directly supported. That is probably still the case. I had to upload my video to YouTube and link to it in my post. If you cannot do this, maybe someone could do it for you if you send them the video...Can you download a video off your phone ,Ive tried a couple of times but just a photo appears Len
