Posted 2 weeks 1 day ago #209472My name is Paolo, I am from Italy (Tuscany, Chianti) and I have recently bought an MG TF 1600 cc (2004). I really like the look and feel of this car and I looked for a green one for a long time. I finally found it and bought it. However, while driving it, I noticed a certain instability and as soon as I got home I took a look at the tires; so I realized that it has two pairs of Diamondblack DH 201 both with 195/45/R16 size.
I know that some people mount the same size on the TF both front and rear, however:
- I am not so expert in rear wheel drive to try that;
- even if I were, I suppose I would like to mount two pairs of 215, not two 195;
. in Italy it is strictly forbidden to mount tires not provided by the manufacturer, and there are serious fines.
So I tried to understand what to put on it. I saw that there are Toyo PRoxes TR1, which are authorized by MG; also the Falken Ziex ZE310 have a sort of informal authorization. But I only found the size 195 45 16 for the FAlken (and only with speeds up to 240 km/h ("v")). The only tires I found available in both sizes and that support speeds above 240 km/h in both sizes that I have found are - besides the Toyo - the following:
LingLong Sport master XL BSW y
Nexen N'Fera Primus XL w
Nexen N'Fera Su1 XL w
The LingLong Sport master caught my attention because they support very high speeds and because they are definitely cheap. I checked on some sites that report the results of some tests and I found conflicting results: a test carried out by autobild offers braking results on both dry and wet surfaces that are decidedly above average, (and also superior to the Toyo). As for the noise produced it seems to be the best: "it shone particularly in the discipline of exterior noise, where it was rated as the absolute best among its competitors, showcasing its capability to provide a quieter ride without compromising on critical safety aspects"; while its values regarding grip on the asphalt are rather mediocre (https://www.thetirelab.com/linglong-sport-master/#tests).
I was seriously thinking of buying those, since they cost little and I'm not a niki lauda....

Posted 2 weeks 1 day ago #209474I would advise against using the same size tyres on the front and rear.
I think that it's recommended to use 215/40/16 on the rear of your car and 195/45/16 on the front.
Personally, I've never had a problem with Toyos and found them good value.

Posted 2 weeks 1 day ago #209476Surely safety criteria such as braking performance, wet weather performance and traction should be the priority, in my experience tyres are never very quiet when the car is sliding off the road and wrapping itself around a tree, which is what happens when shit tyres are used!
I wouldn't get so hung up on the 240+ kph speed rating, a 1.6 TF won't be traveling at such speeds.

Posted 2 weeks 1 day ago #209484I have to say though that I would still be using Avon tyres, however they are no longer made in our sizes. The Avons performed & they lasted, I still have a front pair in good order as spares whilst much younger tyres are long gone.
I am in complete agreement with Cobb’s, especially about using certain tyres on wheel barrows.

Posted 2 weeks 1 day ago #209485As for the Falkens V Toyos.......you should be fine with either, really down to personal preference.

Posted 2 weeks 21 hours ago #209489I have used Nexen tyres on my F (although not those types)with very favourable results both with wet and dry grip, braking and wear rate. The last set of tyres were Falkens. Again, I was impressed with those.
I wouldn't advise using Linglongs either.
On the TF the pressures are pretty important, so check that as soon as possible.
On certain specials, like the F mk2 Freestyle, the standard tyres were 215/40/16xl all around so it was done by MGR. However the TF Suspension is very different from the F.
VERY IMPORTANT
It is vital that the rear tyres are XL load rated. The stronger tyre wall is necessary for handling. Ideally, I would recommend XL load rating for all 4 tyres.
