Looking for suggestions about replacing the carpet and sound insulation on the parcel shelf on a TF.
it's such poor quality and makes access to the hood clips difficult.

Reconstituted foam. It comes in various thicknesses, is easy to work & although, like a good many things, it could be cheaper, when you consider it’s lots of foam off cuts bonded together, it won’t reduce you to penury.
You will find it on eBay & the service was great, at least from the lass I bought mine off.

The original sound deadening material was a felt-ish material with a rubber backing. I guess the rubber backing was intended as a heat insulation. It was cut in a sort of octopus like manner, with the ‘arms’ intended to fold upward to insulate the sides of the rear shelf. Over time, the rubber dries out and the whole thing becomes brittle. The ‘arms’ end up breaking off and become standalone pieces. It has acquired the nickname name ‘dead dog’.

I plan on doing this replacement later this year. I will use the various pieces as a template. As for insulation material, I was thinking of using a foil backed engine bay type insulation. You can find this material in Temu and eBay. The problem is always you don’t know what you are getting until it arrives.

Replacing the plastic molded carpet piece is more involved. I agree that it is not the best quality, but I do not plan to change mine.

The carpet cover off an f is more amenable than the later tf.
Neither are great but the f isn’t is less not great than the tf.

That's interesting Mark. So F is more amenable to actually bending rather than turning up at the edges. 'Couse it's also older.  I did find that extending the cut (sideways) in the "Dog" floppy bits allowed the hood clips to close easier.  It is brilliantly designed to not quite allow  all 5 clips to fit no matter how it is wrestled in place.  Also take the head rests off first.

I’ve had the f for twelve years plus & I’m still messing with engine cover & accoutrements. I replaced a catch the other day using M4 rivnuts & Allen headed screws. It went well, so I drilled the lot off & replaced them all; as per an earlier comment, removing them with the lecy screwdriver takes half as long as struggling with the bastard things as originally fitted. I’ve rivnutted the retaining screw threads & used Allen screws again. A ball headed key in a the wizzy screwdriver shifts that lot smartish.
I think I’m finished arseing about with it now.

Though the dead dog and engine cover seems unnecessarily difficult to remove it must be said that the 5 clip arrangement that hold the rear of the hood are simple and elegant compared to comparable convertibles. Removing an MX5 hood frame took me a couple of hours with 2 people, most of that time on the very complicated bolted arrangement at the rear of the hood. The guy who i sold it to then spent even longer fitting it to his car. The same job on a TF is a delight and an absolute doddle to swap a hood frame thanks to those clips and the elegant design that uses only 4 easy to access bolts for the whole assembly.

I'll put it on the list for next time!  Add the shortened bolts and split washers to the front awkwards on the engine cover and jobs a breeze!

I read somewhere that the hood was designed by Pininfarina.  Might explain something.

In its entirety, the hood system is an object lesson in intelligent design. Having said that, no one would say that gaining access to the engine is a quick job. It is, however, what has to be put up with if you want a cost effective mid engined British sports car.
For the most part we are fiddlers, requiring access so we can poke about in its gizzards, thus it is us who get frustrated with its idiosyncrasies, as opposed to the mechanics into whose lap it would notionally fall.
I would rather struggle, than have something that looks like the cousin of engine drivers hat.

I totally agree, most owners will probably never get involved with having to expose the engine.
My frustration with the TF has been, because I have had cover on and off so many times over the last few weeks.
All sorted..for now

I have recently had the hood well carpet and sound insulation pad out of my car. The insulation felt is torn and delaminating. I repaired it with clear packaging tape along the edges and over the tears. I thought maybe a long term solution is to cover it with vinyl contact film? It might also make it easier to slide into position.

The hood well carpet fits okay at the rear and along the rear bulkhead even though it is stiff, except for over the seat belt recoilers (my TF has the Rover X-Power hoop brackets also) where it appears to have shrunk and doesn't meet the bulkhead. I was wondering if could be reformed to fit using a hot air blower?

I see Rimmer Bros have both the hood well carpet and sound insulation pad listed in their catalogue, are they still available and what is the quality like?
