We had a 'Viper Stripes on the TF 85' Question a couple of weeks ago. I only remember because it's one of the rare ones I got right.
It's not that is it?

Nope, not what I was thinking...but I hadn't even thought of Viper stripes or seen the post  , not that that would be an official association with MG.
No think of the joke about why the Viper couldn't vipe its nose...there's a clue to the snake to which I am referring, and it was an official name in the company at the time, and chosen because of...?

Correct.
From Aronline:
I have recently seen the white standard looking-ish MGB Roadster that was used as the development car, now in private hands, and I gather from the owner the Adder name was a joke relating to the AC Cobra given the RV8 was to have a V8.
As to the joke, why couldn't the Viper vipe its nose? Because the Adder had her hankerchief. Sorry
From Aronline:
Project Adder came about in the closing months of 1989, when following the successful re-introducion of the MGB bodyshell by British Motor Heritage, the idea was floated of building new cars using this shell as a starting point. Into 1990 and the idea rapidly began to gain momentum once the management had given the project its blessing, following further positive market research. The formation of Rover Special Products in early 1990 facilitated the “new” MGB’s development without compromising concurrent Rover saloon car projects.
