I'd like to see what interesting, affordable, cars there are out there and find out what your point of reference was before getting behind the wheel of the MGF/TF
I didnt get out of anything to get my MGF or my MGB ~ my everyday car is a Honda Accord 2.0 VTEC SE Executive Sport, with ss auto box, bought new in 2000 and now nearing 90k miles. my previous Honda Accord (like the Rover 600) went to 107,000 miles before i sold it on, never failed a MoT and apart from servicing and tyres only needed two rear silencer boxes in its life. prior to this i had a series of company cars. and going backwards. 2.9 litre Ford Scorpio with 24 valve Cosworth engine (what a beauty), 2.3litre Ford Granada Ghia X, Vauxhall Cavilier 2.0 CDi, had three of these on 2 year/ 60k contracts, Ford Sierra 2.0 Ghia (absolute rubbish car) two Ford Cortinas, GL and GLX, Ford Capri 2.0 litre GL, Sunbeam Alpine, Hillman Avenger, Morris 1100, Mini 1275 Cooper S, Morris Minor 1000, Austin 7 Mini, Morris Minor Van, Wolseley 18/80, Austin Seven Ruby and briefly a SS Jaguar. I used to often borrow a friends Jaguar XK 150S, but it was only doing about 10 miles to the gallon and also a girlfriends TR3a ~ before this i had a Lambretta TV175 and a 350cc Single cylinder Matchless. before that a pushbike, a tri- cycle and an Austin Pedal Car (they are worth around 10k now) ******** my choiceof future car would be the DB9 convertable. :woohoo:

Since an MGF/TF isn't going to set you back more than a few thousand, how about next car has to cost around £5000 including insurance.

Posted 13 years 2 months ago #30943My wife drives a Chrysler PT Cruiser which is a bit of a dog but at least it doesn't look like the average econobox.
Speaking of Estelles; I bought A 135i new in 1989. It was one of the last built and ran Bendix fuel injection. It was a great car, quite peppy, and dead reliable. It never broke down in 5 years of service, including a couple of winter rallies through the Rockies. (With a set of Hakkapelittas it kept up with the Mazda 323 AWD's and Eagle Talon 4WD's) My wife always thought it was too noisy but I never told her that I had installed headers and a competition exhaust. When Skoda pulled out of the Canadian market I sold it.
What would I buy after the MGF? No idea, but the Trophy will be available for import in a couple of years!
Of course I would like an Aston, but not one of the Ford era cars. I will never be able to afford one anyway!

My previous cars were:
Ford Orion 1.6 Ghia (bought from a friend who worked at Fords, so was a really good price. I didn't pass my test until then, as I'd lived all my life in the centre of London, so never needed a car.
I had that from 88-91 when my Dad passed and I inherited his 6 month old 2.0L Cavalier, which was perfect for our 4 person family.
After 10 years and 140K miles it shed a piston ring on the M1 (looked like an F1 car 'letting go). Amazingly, it kept running and I made it 2.5 miles to the next services and actually turned it off with the key - never to go again. :nonod:
TBH I was quite enamoured with the reliability I had from the Vauxhall and as I was driving a 56 mile round trip to work each day I decide to get an Omega, for comfort in traffic jams. After a lot of digging found an 18 month old 2.6L manual ex police car with 44K on the clock at a just over 25% of the new price from a Vauxhall dealer with a 12 month warrenty.
This lasted until we decided to get something smaller for holidays around the UK, as we had already started touring in te Omega
We saw an MGF in Stratford upon Avon and after comparing the luggage space of the available sports cars decided the F/TF was for us. About 2 weeks later a new neighbour put his F up for sale and the rest is history. :yesnod:
As for a replacement I have to say I can't think of anything within the £5k buget that I would change it for

The MGB GT was dubbed as "the poor man's Aston Martin" so there is a historical precedence to back up your observations :silly:

Honda S2000 gives hairy chested opposite lock motoring for under 5k, just remember to fit wipers on the side glass so you can see where you are going on wet days

The BMW was the best car I have ever driven, but far too fast and quiet to be safe if you are in a hurry, you get insulated for the surroundings and have no concept of your relational speed ( hence its too easy to get caught speeding). The MGF is great as at about 80 you start to drown out the stereo so slow down when cruising and therefore mitigate collection of points.

Six points later...
As for what would replace the TF, I think that I'd only replace it when I had the money to upgrade significantly. I keep thinking about a 996 Targa as a replacement as it has back seats so the whole family could fit.
Back with front wheel drive and 181HP at the wheels

Actually are you sure a 996 is such a good idea :bust:
