Now as you read this you would be right to be suspicious.
However, what I want is a replacement instrument panel ideally from a low mileage car, then I want to re set to the mileage of my high mileage vehicle.
Can this be done? If so how is it achieved please?
I do not want a false mileage either high or low.

Back in the days of mechanical speedos here in Melbourne we had an old bloke called Speedo George who made a good living winding speedos back for the dodgey car dealers he had a battery drill and many modified  speedo cables the plug into the back of the speedo, his business model got wrecked by the emergence of the digital speedo, but I s'upose it would still be possible but you would need to some up with some sort of pulse signal generator to plug into the speedo, something that a bloke chap like Airportable could knock up before breakfast.........now there is an idea for a nice little earner for you Airportable......

Without desoldering chip from instrument cluster, reading it, finding where mileage is written, programming new eprom chip and soldering it back to instrument cluster, you will not be able to change mileage.
Pulse generator will help you to clock-up the mileage but you cennot clock-it-back.
In short, you cannot easily change mileage on instrument cluster.

Of course it won’t wind it backwards but neither would ol’ Speedo George’s method of winding analog speedos with the drill, but he would wind it forward to go backwards, once it had gone around the clock at zero and keep on going until he hit the desired number, for digital speedos you could do the same, wind it forwards to get past zero and onwards to the desired number.

The pulse forward idea came to mind initially but I’d like to bet there’ll be a check bit in the software to prevent this.
Trying to tell the electronics you are travelling at a speed greater than the analog dial, would chuck a digital spanner in the works.
You might conceivably spoof it into thinking you are travelling at 120mph but there again it would only accept that for a period of time.
The ECU would throw up anomalies like this & that info could be read on a code reader.
Right it’s breakfast time, porridge as usual, you’ve got to keep your cholesterol under control.

In reality the scam probably wouldn't work these days anyway at least not here in Oz as every time a car changes hands a notice of disposal and a notice of acquisition are lodged with the registration authorities and the mileage is recorded on these forms and fed into  the database so any mileages that seem to go backwards would flag a please explain.
It would take ol' George ages to wind one back this way but as he only dealt with dealers he would charge them for the whole day + so much per car, and would do several cars at the same time  to absorb the costs. It worked for him as he had the trade contacts, being as he was a former car detailer

With the older mechanical odometer/speedos it was possible to physically rotate the number dials to create a new mileage reading. However, in Blighty, the good old home country, the mileage is recorded every year when you go for your MOT certification, so a pretty pointless exercise, unless you were trying to match a replacement clock to the correct mileage.
Interestingly, my mk2 F (electronic odometer) had a replacement second hand instrument cluster fitted that was approx 100,000 miles less than actual. It was simply recorded into the MOT database as such.🫡

This information can be kept either in the display or in the ECU, if kept in the ECU a replacement display would immediately show the appropriate value.
Anyway it’s a moot point really, these days with regular monitoring of mileages, you would need to be determined to change the values.
If your car was over forty years old & didn’t require an MOT & therefore no mileage is recorded, it is preconceived that the mileage is going to be high as a mater of course, so why bother.

In the old days with the numbered letters on a roller it was very easy to spring them apart and rotate them like a rubic cube to get the desired reading.
So I am told...

Actually I used to know a very dodgey unlicenced used car dealer, (he was a friend of my evil sister) who dealt it jap cars, he would open up the speedo and would use a very sharp needle to rotate the cover with the numbers printed on it by carefully pricking it and dragging it around the cylinder it was mounted on, this bloke Earl was so crooked he couldn't lie straight in bed and always had some scam or another on the go!

Ok, it might be possible to wind mileage on but not back. I get that.
Im not sure the MOT situation has been grasped completely.
If I turn up to the next MOT with a lower mileage than previously recorded what happens next?

It is one of reasons I would like to acquire a used low mileage item and “wind on the mileage” somehow. I had a brief thought that this might be achieved through pscan, probably not.

What puzzles me is that if it is so difficult to do how come it has become not uncommon to see that service advertised on lamp posts etc.
