It's an oil temperature gauge.

Mine works but it doesn't do much. Once the car is fully warmed up it hovers around the 120 mark and only ever creeps higher on sustained runs at 70mph.

I had wondered if it could be replaced with an oil pressure gauge.

The 'crinkle' stuff is what I used. When I was looking around for material, I'm pretty sure that I spoke to The Mesh Company and they were very helpful but I was drawn in by the absolute bargain from China (It cost me about £15 to do the whole car and I've still got some left.). I was looking for Jaguar mesh (I was thinking of the S Type grille).

Hi thanks for your reply, looks neat enough to me. Is it a hard job to do or relatively easy?
Regard Glyn (D4KGP)
Well, I don't do hard jobs; I get someone else to do those :-)

It was easy enough, I made cardboard templates from the original bits or by measurement.  I marked the mesh with a Sharpie.  I cut the mesh with a decent pair of snips  like these from Stanley.   Fixing the pieces in the boot lid was fiddly but I guess the hardest part is removing the bumpers.  I had the front bumper off to replace the headlights and the back bumper off for some other reason.  It might be possible to do them in situ, but I doubt it.

One thing I forgot to mention...

With this type of mesh, the crossing wires are not welded so the smaller pieces tend to come apart if you aren't careful. I fixed them in various ways. Using body fixings, Araldite and a hot glue gun. The glue gun was easiest but not the neatest (see the front grille)

Hi everyone, has anyone any idea where to get some mesh to replace the rusty stuff that's on my TF.
  Many thanks Glyn  (D4KGP)
I replaced all of the mesh on my TF with stainless steel mesh that I bought on ebay.  I bought mine as a large piece about 1000 x 500mm (not sure exactly as it was a long time ago).  I cut it to size with some heavy duty snips.  It was TOUGH and it took a while but I was very pleased with the results.

The chinese supplier is no longer on ebay but you could try AliExpress or similar.  Alternatively, there are loads of people selling a huge range of the material on ebay - just search for "stainless steel mesh".

Many thanks for the link. I'll pop the wheel off and have a look.
The coupler wouldn't explain why the alarm sounds as soon as I lock the car. I assumed the horn not working and the alarm sounding where linked ?
Ah!  I wasn't fully understanding the complexity of the problem.  The alarm is sounded with the horns so my logic was that if the horns themselves work and the fuse is OK the rotary coupler was possibly faulty.  I had thought that the alarm sounding when you lock the car might have been the sort of blipping that car alarms used to make all the time when they were armed.  In my '04 TF, there is a fair bit it clicking and the hazard lights do a bit of flashing when I set the alarm.

This problem with the horn.  Have you been able to check the rotary coupler in the steering wheel?   There is a video on YouTube.

Just a word of warning re SRS (Suplementary Restraint System - airbag and seatbelt pre-tensioners), don't muck around with anything to do with the SRS without having disconnected the battery and leaving it for a while first.

Early cars have different connectors under the seat from later cars. It could be that somebody replaced the seats at some point and soldered the wires in preference to swapping the pre-tensioners.

I'm no expert but since nobody else has picked this up...

Did you solve this?
Is the pscan connected and the ignition turned on?
What is the vehicle?
