Here you go:  How to extend the alarm / fob operating range.

I should probably have read the whole thread I linked to because further down the page you will find this nugget of extra information .  The Pektron antenna is inside the control unit.

"The Pektron SCU has no external antenna, the internal radio receiver board has an antenna on the circuit board. Poor radio range on these units is usually caused by the radio receiver board itself, it's a common problem" (Thanks Paul)

The recognised expert on all things Pektron is Paul at Technozen.  Paul can work wonders with the Pektron system, it seems.  If the current thread was my problem, I'd be giving him a call...

Answer to Debourt.
Sent original box away to be copied and replaced. The replacement Included two new key fobs.
On receipt I fitted new box, remote central locking failed. Contacted seller who advised rebooting via car battery, which I did. All good briefly, then failed again. Refitted original pektron box. All worked well for a couple of months, now having real trouble with remote locking/unlocking. The replacement box still fails altogether with remote locking.
To Judith’s handyman, I will try different angles, but when it was working correctly, any angle would do, from a significant distance, even through to house windows.

I have only had my “Pectron” car since mid year and have had it on SORN since beginning of November.
I recently “borrowed” the car’s battery to help boost the starting capability of a different vehicle. After that I put the battery back in the car and re charged it with a smart charger. After going through the ritual of putting the key in the ignition and turning to first position etc I locked and unlocked the car with each of the two fobs I have. I then locked the car (using the key in the driver’s side door to avoid engaging all the alarm features) and that was in early Dec when it was relatively warm outside.
During the recent cold weather I had need to enter the car so unlocked it using the Pectron but as the first key did not seem to work I went for the spare. That worked but as you say only when much closer to the car window than I had been used to.

So is ambient temperature a factor?

Don’t think temperature is the issue. My problems started back in the summer. Been changing pektron boxes, batteries and scratching my head ever since.

Could it simply be a solonoid that is slowing up and not neccesarily the electronics.
Seems to be prevalent with either unit fitted.

Yes it is. The door card is easy to take off and usually without any damage.
Worth trying to see what happens when you use the key fob.

There has been lots written about the door locks. Its worth checking the How Tos and doing a search for relevant forum threads. These cars have been around for such a time and so many owners have asked about most faults ob the forum that learning from. the sizeable amount of accumulated knowledge is time well spent

When I get chance I’ll check the connections in the door area. See if anything changes . Fingers crossed.

Dredging up a nugget of info from the depths, I remember that one weird but effective trick was to hold the remote against your forehead while pressing the button.
it worked, although you could get strange looks in a crowded car park!🤣
