I left school at 15 & served a 5yr apprenticeship as a joiner & worked on the tools until 1984 when I moved into supervision/ management I worked for a couple of local authorities & finally for a large Housing Association as a Contract Manager in 2011 I was offered early retirement which for me was a couple of years to early but I gave it some thought & took it intending to look for a partime job but I've never found anything I fancy doing so I am now the official maintenance man to the Rushton household spending my time doing various jobs around the house I've put off for years & decorating room after room I've just boarded the roof in the garage including 200mm of insulation fitted double glazing & heating & insulated the up n over door, but the boss has got me decorating again so the garage is on the back burner for a while. I spend a couple of afternoons a week sampling scones & toasted teacakes at various cafes in the Lancs/Yorks area & intend this year now the big jobs are done around the house spending more time riding my Triumph Tiger 800 I don't know how I found the time to work & thank God for final salary pension schemes!!!

Au contraire, Benjamino. I have been on several deep mine visits and I was knackered just waking round looking at stuff. I couldn't imagine working down there. Power plants are hot and dirty, but you can always nip out for a fag and some sunshine.

You do get used to the environment underground with time, the main thing with the job is your mostly your own boss, loads of freedom. no two days are ever the same and there is much improvisation and thinking to get round problems and the camaraderie is brilliant, everyone looks out for each other and we do have a laugh.

Unfortunately though I may be looking for a job sooner than I think, we got evacuated out the mine yesterday, the mines rescue came but even they have been pulled out now so it doesn't look good. I can't say what is happening just yet until it gets released in the public domain but can say that no-one has been hurt in any way :broon:

Its finally made it into the newspapers, friday afternoon we were evacuated out of the mine, part of one of the face roads went up in flames causing the roof to collapse, rescue teams were called to ensure we all got out safely but then they in turn were pulled out, the decision has been made to isolate all power to the mine and cease ventilating it, carbon monoxide readings were at 10,000 ppm but now there is no ventilation methane will also be building up, very dangerous times ahead, thats if they let us underground again so guessing I'm going to be needing a new job now :( worst I've ever seen, you could only see a few feet in front of you because the smoke was that thick

well just been up to work and been told that everyone has to go back home and they will call us sometime, possibly between 3-6 months? they are hoping to pay us for the last month we have worked but can't guarantee after that, but we aren't being made redundant :-? . they also said that they will try to save the place but then ten minutes later in their press release they said they would be winding down to closure

Anyone got any mining jobs going? :P

The really pathetic thing is that there are coal reserves under Britain to fuel us for the next 200 years. Economically viable pits were shut down solely because Thatcher was pissed at the miners' union and especially at Scargill. So now we import foreign coal!

couldn't agree more, the last pit I worked at in northumberland flooded and was closed, but it was nowhere near as bad as the company made out and we were ordered not to continue pumping, unfortunately this mining company does not want any coal mines, only the property side of the business. so really the thatcher scenario is still ongoing :(

Keith that sounds really awful, just pleased that you and your colleagues all made it out safely.

The future for the mine though doesn't look good, if the company was keen, then maybe it would reopen, but from what you say that doesn't look likely :(

At least you have loads of transferable skills and experience, fingers crossed you find something very soon :hugs:

This girl doesn't mind getting her hands dirty !!!
