I am amazed that it is so difficult to find info on the origins of this MG Live regular event.
One of the reasons I'm setting such a question That, and I'm a autotest man so a bit of promotion of the sport as well
It's neither of the Centres with 'California' in their name.

I must admit I knew very little about the California Cup, I've now read blogs on it, watched video clips of it, read the results since the turn of the century, studied several club news letters :bang: but still can't find the answer ....mind you I have got the application form so may be looking for a couple fellow North West F'ers to enter a team :bust: so it's a result for you Andrew.
Lots of work today, will check back late afternoon, come on T-Bar quizzers find the answer and put me out of my misery.

Edited to add - good work PQ, we'll be there again next year almost certainly. Just need to find a Midget for my wife to drive and we'll have a team again.

The Chairman of the UK MGCC made a tour of U.S. and Canadian Centres and presented one of the four Nuffield Overseas Trophies to the Long Beach (S. California) Centre. In return, Long Beach presented the Parent Club with the mammoth California Cup 'as a gesture of appreciation for all the fun we've had with M.G.s'.
The Nuffield Cup history in North America is a very strange one, here is an exert from a newsletter of the MG Car Club Western New York Centre. (pages 16 and 17)
In 1936 Lord Nuffield (formerly Sir William Morris) decided that as patron of the MG Car Club something should be done that
would “enhance the club’s prestige, assist its growth, and add to the enthusiasm of its members”. He commissioned a solid gold cup and personally wrote out a check for £ 136, an amount that would have bought a brand new Morris car, of that time.
That trophy was then awarded to the Centre “which had shown the most meritorious growth, and enterprise during the
previous year”.
With the rapid growth of the club following the post 1945 boom in MG exports, four more trophies were
commissioned only in silver not gold. These were to be awarded yearly to the Centres in Europe, North America, Africa and Oceana (Australia & New Zealand) “for annual competition between the Centres of the club”. So now the Nuffield Trophy was
international and all four were to be awarded yearly.
In 1954, the US the trophy was awarded to the Long Beach CA centre. From there it went to Centres in: Washington DC, Central NY, Long Beach again for two years, and in 1960 it was awarded to Western NY.
The criteria by which the trophy is awarded has changed a few times and the trophy itself has 'disappeared' on more than one occasion. For the story behind this please see the full article (link proved above)

This trophy, presented by the Long Beach Centre of the MG Car Club in Southern California, with which the Lincolnshire Centre has had close ties for a very long time, is awarded annually to the MG owned by a Centre member scoring the most points at MGCC events throughout the year. The scores are calculated on a Points Basis agreed by the Committee.
I feel like I've taken part in 24 hour non-stop endurance race :slapme:
Thanks for that question Andrew, the research has been very informative :broon:
