Well, I can find that VE5212 was an 18-80 Mark II two-seater. Now the only part of that name which was later used would be the Mark II bit, which was used for the MGA as an official model designator. Also used on the MGB later. Is this what you're after?

Other names recycled included Magnette (twice now), Midget, TF and MG F, although in the case of the F the original was called F-type.

01 MG ZS 180: LHD, for driving around Germany in

You need to look at the complete title of the car name! It is not MkII, but a number is the clue.

Is it because the 18/80 was first known as the MG six?

Spot, David, MG SIX, which I believe at the time related to the number of cylinders, but the MG Six was shown on the stand at Earls Court iirc in 1928.

As to the reused names, the Midget, Magnette and TF were what I was looking for. The MG F came about I believe as part of the sequence of MGA, MGB, MGC and then MGD and MGE were concepts and MGF was the next in the evolution.

So fight amongst yourselves for the next question. :broon:

OK then, a slightly lazy question but following on from Martin's...

Now we know the Magnette name has been used before, can you name all the MGs to bear the moniker? ....AND... there was a third 'M' from the famous original MMM cars - what was it and where has that been used more recently (a car, specifically)?

96 MGF 1.8i: Project Rally Car
98 MGF Abingdon" 285H cams, modded head etc
87 MG Metro: 1440cc fast road car
88 MG Metro Turbo
70 MG Midget: 1.9L VVC + supercharger + RWD = YEEHAA!

Magnette

The MG K-Type Magnette, produced from 1932 to 1934.
Launched in 1932 at the London Motor Show, the K-Type replaced the F-Type Magna but having at first a slightly smaller capacity engine it took the name Magnette. This range from K1 to KN.

The MG N-Type Magnette was produced from October 1934 to 1936.
Which ranged from NA and NE

The name was then revived for the uninspired range of saloon cars of the 1950s and 1960s. Use of the Magnette name on an MG saloon car with a lowered Wolseley body and an Austin engine brought protest from motor magazine letter writers. There were two distinct series of these Magnettes;

The ZA / ZB produced from 1953 to 1958

The Mark III / IV produced from 1959 through to 1968.

MG6 Magnette produced from 2011 to date
MG most recently revived the name again when in June 2011, they announced that the saloon version of the MG 6 would carry the Magnette name on cars for the UK and European markets.

The name Triple M derives from the three main model classifications; Midget, Magna and Magnette. Although if we refer to the size indication then Magna should be the last as it is the largest.

 Hopefully that answer meets with MG mad's approval.

To keep things moving, take a look at the photos below and then post a photo of the MG with name most similar to its Jaguar namesake.

I agree with MG Ex-E for the E type.

I am going to suggest MG F-Type for No. 2

MG C-type for No. 4

MG D-Type for No.1

And on the S-type,

The MG SA or MG 2-litre was a sporting saloon produced by the MG Car company from 1936 to 1939. Launched as the 2 litre, it only later became known as the SA, the car had been originally planned as an advanced performance saloon to rival the likes of SS Cars (later to be known as Jaguar) and even Bentley with all independent suspension and was given the factory code of EX150 and designated the S-type
