Posted 3 weeks 4 days ago #209228Anyway the knobs and rings arrived and today was the day for a nice, easy upgrade...err no!
It's never going to end well when you cut corners and when rebuilding I didn't change the heater controls ...so when I tried to remove the 1st knob it snapped the spindle interesting fact, the temp control spindle is plastic

No problem, I have a spare 🙂
It would have been a bit easier if I wasn't a ham fisted oaf that broke the circuit board
4 hours and much swearing later I had everything back together and I'm pleased with the result.

Posted 3 weeks 4 days ago #209237The speed is continually variable & has a high speed demist/boost setting. There’s a switch built into the knob which selects continuously variable, off & boost.
It was great fun to build, I’ll add some pictures if anyone is interested.

Posted 2 weeks 4 days ago #209409Thanks to @notanumber for pointing out the wiring would be there.
Used a step cutter on the door card for a neat fit and they work a treat.
Low coolant alarm from Mr.Cotsell arrived today so that's the next job.

Posted 2 weeks 4 days ago #209415One of the plastic heater control knobs failed in the week so I picked up a second hand set of Mike Satur aluminium ones on Ebay. They are very solid but I have to say I prefer the less cluttered look of the originals
Can I ask why they fail? My heater knob turns to the hot position and everything is hot but if I try to turn it down it jams half way. If I leave it to cool it goes all the way back to off again. Is this why they break because I daren't actually force it back to off.

Posted 2 weeks 4 days ago #209417On mine, it was the knob for the fan which had broken and prompted the change. Unlike the others this just consists of a switch, without mechanical linkages, though it does still require quite a positive turn to click between speed positions.
The knob for the direction control fell apart when I removed it so the only intact original survivor was the one for the temperature control.

David Aiketgate wrote:- The temperature control knob is attached to a bowden cable that operates a valve in the coolant flow pipework. It is often the valve tbat becomes stiff. Disconnecting tbe cable and operating the valve manually may free it off. (Or it may be on its way to fail.)
Incidentally, you can adjust the range of the temperature knob by moving where the cable is attached by the clip to tbe valve.( Beware tbe clip can fly off and disappear.@Ask me how I know...)
