Sorry RedDevil, close but no cigar MARK BLUNDELL was in the MG Lola car 33. In 2001 MARTIN BRUNDLE drove the Bentley EXP Speed 8 for Team Bentley, car 7, according to my research and the help of Wikipedia,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2001_24_Hours_of_Le_Mans

You need to go back "a few" years

in the Wiki link I see MARK BLUNDELL in the MG but BRUNDLE is only listed in the Bentley.... :nonod: :-?

2001 is not the year I was thinking of, But if there are two answers and yours is right and no-one gets the year I am thinking about I will gladly hand the baton over to you Red especially as it's your Birthday. !! :broon:

Clues to the year:
We did not yet know Madonna was a Virgin
We hadn't reached the year George Orwell wrote about
Apple Makintosh is not yet on the market
Virgin hasn't left the ground on its first flight yet

OK as nobody else has come forward I will have a stab at this.

There are two years I think it could be, 1984 or 1985 as Martin Brundle took part in the racing on both years.

The race series was RallySprint, held at Donington Park, in which Grand Prix racing drivers would compete against World Championship rally drivers in three events. The results for the two years were;

Oct 27th 1984
Nigel Mansell 1, Michele Mouton 2, Martin Brundle 3, Marc Duez 4, Jimmy McRae 5, Keke Rosberg 6, Per Eklund 7 and John Watson 8.

Rally: Rover SD1
Autotest: Austin Metro
Race: MG Montego 2.0 EFi

Cars built by: "Austin Rover Motorsport" according to the 1984 Racecard. However, ARG Motorsport (ARGM) based at Cowley were primarily doing SD1s with TWR and the Metro 6R4, so it is thought that “Roger Dowson Engineering” may have have been contracted to build the Rally Sprint cars, on ARGM's behalf.

1985 Nov 30th
Nigel Mansell 1, Kalle Grundel 2, Juha Kankkunen 3, John Watson 4, Thiery Boutsen 5, Martin Brundle 6, Malcolm Wilson 7, and Stig Blomqvist 8.

Rally: MG Metro 6R4
Autotest: Rover 216 Vitesse
Race: MG Montego Turbo

Cars built by: Metro -works car. Rover 216 & Montegos -"Roger Dowson Engineering"

In 1984 the info I have from the programme states that the MG Montego 2.0 EFi produced 115bhp but since they had a free flow exhaust fitted the bhp would be slightly higher, but does not put a figure on it.

The above are from 1984

Hopefully that covers most of your question?
I will add to it, but am putting this up before I get pipped at the post by Bryan Young

EDIT: Was still typing when Gadget2466 put up his post so was unaware of the pre 1984 clue  There goes a perfectly good MG Quiz question, thanks Gary :P

wrong year, wrong series, wrong car Paul.

All the above clues occurred in 1984, so it is before that

In this year we Goodbye to Dick Emery, David Niven and Karen Carpenter.

Amy Winehouse will be be born as will Cheryl Cole.

The MG6R4 is not the car, almost, but not yet - its' predecessor.......

OK so the year is 1983. Since Martin Blundle shot to fame in 1983 after a season long battle with Ayrton Senna in Formula 3, the main F1 feeder series at the time, I didn't think he had had much time for anything else that year. He lost the series in the final race to Senna. Nevertheless having shown his talent he graduated to F1, with Senna, driving for the legendary Ken Tyrrell in 1984.

As to the MG he drove that year it had to be the newly released MG Metro Turbo

The MG Metro Turbo increased the output of the MG Metro from 72 to 93bhp.

The event must thus be the Unipart sponsored Group A MG Metro Turbo team in the 1983 Trimoco RAC British Saloon Car Championship.

Martin Brundle Joined Tony Pond and Patrick Watts at the final round of the 1983 Trimoco BTCC at Silverstone, in an attempt to stop the Alfa Romeo GTV6 of Andy Rouse winning the Championship outright in favour of their Rover Vitesse team-mates. It was all irrelevant several months later when all the Rovers and Metros were thrown out of the Championship over illegalities!

Just to add to Brundle - MG links

MG Metro Turbo - ETC 500Kms at Donington in 1984

Robin Brundle, younger brother of Martin Brundle, drove with Patrick Watts the following year, 1984, in the Computervision sponsored MG Metro Turbo. Robin Brundle also took part in the Istel Tourist Trophy at Silverstone with former Metro Challenge Champion, Tim Harvey.

:slapme: ...Which all goes to prove what we have discovered so many times before .... there are often several perfectly good answers to any MG Quiz question.

I'm all researched out now I'm off to bed. ;)

;) Didn't want to leave the MG Quiz faithful without something to consider.

Assuming the above is finally the year and car Gary was after, here is my question and the 200th MG Quiz question to date :woohoo:

A well known name in MG circles, name the driver and his company.

The beer that 'works wonders' initials my help if you need to confirm your thoughts.

This information could come in useful someday.

OK, so Paul pretty much covered everything, the answers I have are
1) MG Metro Turbo, 200bhp. Also driven by Tony Pond in the same series
http://www.classicdriver.de/uk/magazine/popup_print.asp?print=true&lPageID=3700&id=11051

2) the Race series was the Trimco British Saloon car Championship. Martin only drove in one round at Silverstone, probably due to his fight Senna in the F3 Series detailed by Paul.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1983_British_Saloon_Car_Championship_season

3)the year was 1983

4) Tony Pond is probably the most famous, who took three class pole positions, one class win, four fastest laps

Bonus point me the team was Unipart with Daily Express.

Well I thought it was a good question, shame it had a couple of possible answers!

Fantastic effort Paul.I think you covered everything, apart form the BHP, you had the standard Turbo output, but the Race car was, I believe, the predecessor to the iconic 6R4 and the web site lists it as a 200bhp car.
Now I would have liked some of that in my MG Metro from 20+ yrs ago!

Paul,

an I have another stab:

I believe the beer which does wonders is DoubleDiamond, which also had another great slogan - "I'm only here for the Beer"

So with Initials of D D, is the driver of the MG Maestro Daryl Davies, racing in the MG OC Race series, possibly at Snetterton, possibly in April 2000????

:yesnod: :yesnod: :broon: :pinch:

Good first effort Gary, you're spot on with the driver, Daryl Davies - but I need you to tell me more about his company which races in very distinctive colours such as the Pink

His company not only races
