I'm still working on this but another part of the jigsaw took time to re-find from research I did ages ago.
In New Zealand, the MG badge even appeared on the late 1980s Montego estate, called the MG 2.0 Si Wagon.
Knew I had seen it somewhere. :yesnod:
Will continue

1) fitted with a diesel engine
I think the first MG to be factory fitted with a diesel engine was the MG ZR
You will find many references to parts for a MG Metro 1.4D, however, I can only find the PSA TUD diesel from the Citroën AX / Peugeot 106 fitted to Rover Metro's not an MG Metro. But I've been wrong many times in the past :slapme:
2) offered as an estate/station wagon
Mr Forgetful is correct but you don't need to go to New Zealand. There was an MG Montego Estate. see this very interesting website
3) offered as a commercial van
In early 2003 The MG Express, created from the MG ZR. The three-model line-up – 105 petrol, 101Ps turbo diesel and range topping 160
This was a first for MG as they had not produced a car derived van before. Indeed the only van produced was MG founder Cecil Kimber’s one-off, MG M-Type Midget ‘High Speed Service Van’ of 1931 - never intended for production.
4) offered with FWD
MG 1100 1962
5) offered with a turbo
There have been supercharged MG's and ones which have had a turbocharger fitted, but they did not start life with one. The 1983 MG Metro Turbo was the first to be offered as a standard model.

Sorry, boys and girls, been tinkering on the MG 1300 in the garage.
Ok, I learn't something new, MG Montego estate in New Zealand! I thought it was the ZT-T. Re the diesel engine, well, I also thought the entire Z range (whether BMW or L Series). And the commercial van was the Express ZR, although an MG based van was used around the factory in the 1930s if I recall, but was a one off.
I seem to recall the traditionalists being up in arms about the time of the Zed range for introducing so many firsts.
Anyway, let's move on to the next question since I only put this one up at the request of Mr Forgetful, so over to the rightful question poser!

Well done Paul - Montego estate - I couldn't find that although I found a reference
However, the estate version was never sold in the UK with the MG badging. The estate version was mentioned in A-Z of Cars of the 1980s by Martin Lewis, with them saying "Thankfully, BL never had the nerve to build an estate version". This was ironic considering there actually was one in existence

If we accept the Montego as the first estate, then I guess you were, Paul?

Going back to my previous question regarding SU just for a moment,
A stoichiometric mixture is the mix that a modern petrol engine using fuel injection attempts to achieve whilst at steady cruising speeds, the ideal stoichiometric air–fuel mixture is approximately 14.7:1 as you point out Martin.
Researching the k-series engine, I noted that the designers used an AFR of 14.5:1
This was the reason for using the figure.
OK Mr Forgetful, where is your question?
MartinW wrote: Right at the beginning I was going to say SU carbs (partly as an insult to F owners ) but where does 14.5 come into it? Isn't stochiometric 14.7? Misleading clues, I say!
Good question, it's just a pity I didn't have a clue what the clues were about...but I do get throttling as in the Simpsons now.

Stoichiometric mixture - sorry you've lost me , rather like the men in white coats who are hanging about
OK
What type of wood was used on the dashboard and who made the wire wheels fitted as standard on the 1950 MG TD
I would suggest that you are careful not to tie yourselves up in knots. Most of you use wireless technology - use it wisely
:yesnod:
