A gentleman named Paul Linney has recently published a book called "Making My Marque" about his lifelong involvement with MGs both here and in the States.

His first MG was a 1930 'M' type.

Donkey Hockey was played with the vehicles in the Motor Pool while stationed in India with the RAF during the war.

Before the war he had a job deboning sardines in a top London restaurant. A review of the book was published in "Safety Fast" January 2012 issue, which can be found here

A C-type Midget achieved MG’s first finish at Le Mans in 1933, winning its class and coming 6th overall (1st in the 1,100 cc class and 2nd in index of performance) driven by John Ludovic Ford and Maurice Baumer.

It was designed for racing and when fitted with the supercharged engine it could easily run at 100 mph. In 1934 it was exported to Australia and was raced until the late Fifties. Restored in the Eighties, in 2008 the car returned to Le Mans for the Le Mans Classic event.

I've sat a few out lately, but this one has such fascinating story, I just couldn't resit.

The car links in to the previous questions on Le Mans and the C-Type. The car was based on the M-Type, which was the first MG to take part in Le Mans in 1930. Two were entered but failed to finish the race.

The car in question took an M-Type engine, reduced the bore to 54mm and stroke reduced to 81mm, to give it a capacity under the 750cc, the limit for a Class H car. The car was finished with a very simple lightweight body. A small supercharger was later fitted to it.
The car was taken to Montlhéry, just outside Paris and on February 16th 1931 it achieved 103.13 mph, the first time for a car of under 750cc, setting a new world record.

The car is the MG Prototype EX120 which was driven by Captain George Eyston

Eyston was never satisfied with merely reaching a speed when he could use the same car to break several records by maintaining it for longer periods. He set out to hold 100 mph for an hour, using the EX120. The car reached this speed, but then the engine caught fire. Still at a speed of around 60 mph, Eyston's managed to jump out of the car and miraculously avoid serious injury.

Eyston with his old friend from Cambridge, James Palmes, who was the engineer behind the modified engine.

Following the record breaking success of the car, MG used it as the base for the C-Type or Montlhéry Midget, which was available with or without supercharger.

One last very interesting bit of the story of the EX120 was that after the car fire Eyston filed another of his many patents for fire-proof asbestos overalls.

To keep the MG Quiz addicts busy, here is your next question;

Four years separate them but what links these two?

Picture 1 is the Tata Aria Convertible Concept prototype, displayed by Tata Motors at Geneva Auto Show in 2000. This car is built on the same platform as the Tata Indica and the car was proposed to be powered by a 140 hp engine.

Picture 2 is the prototype new MG Midget, to be based on the Tata Aria concept cars (Rover used another Tata as the basis of their Rover CityRover) announced in 2003. The concept never made it into production and Tata Motors made it clear that they did not wish to share platforms if the MG Rover Group was bought up by another company. A small business in Cheshire also had similar ideas on the MG Midget Cars in 2007 but were withdrawn from bidding for the rights after lack of financial aid. Apparently the Smart Roadster was to be used as the basis for a new MG under Project Kimber however this has not come to fruition. The Smart went out of production in 2005.

Picture 1 is indeed the Tata Aria Convertible Concept. It is this that was to be the base of the 2003 MG Midget concept car, had it ever gone forward

Picture 2 is from four years later

In 2007 another MG Midget concept was put forward, this time based on the Smart Roadster.

So Hari you have all the information and knowing the source you so cleverly located, I can understand where the slight confusion arose, however I reckon that deserves another slice of the MG Quiz pie.

:woohoo: Well done Hari - you're in double figures as that win takes your total to 10 :woohoo:

Slightly off, but thank you for giving me the benefit of the doubt Paul

Second goalpost down! Into double figures!

Next question:

What does this have to do with MG?
