The link is in the title of two different songs written and recorded by the groups about the MGB GT :yesnod:

First the Fairport Convention song by Richard Thompson

"MGB-GT"

Oh I've got a little car and she might go far
She's the mistress of my heart now
She's a '65 with an overdrive
And I fixed her in every part now
Two in the front and two in the back
110 on the old Hog's Back
My MGB-GT, she's a runner now
MGB-GT
Oh my MGB-GT, she's a runner now

Oh I welded the sills and the old floor pan
Cut the rust with the torch and the hacksaw
Took the Rostyles off, put the spoked wheels on
Got a brand new Salisbury axle
When I come to town the girls all smile
They say "Here's the man with the retro style"
My MGB-GT, she's a runner now
MGB-GT
Oh my MGB-GT, she's a runner now

Lockheed discs and twin SUs
Original chrome on the grille now
She looks like a dream in her racing green
Competition's standing still now
I sprayed up her body, I strenghtened the frame
I stripped her right down and I built her up again

Now an Alpine's fine if you've got the time
And a Healey'll set you back some
And a TR4 costs a little bit more
But it don't have the same attraction
Hard top handy, in case of the weather
I don't care if it rains forever
In my MGB-GT, she's a runner now
MGB-GT
In my MGB-GT, she's a runner now
MGB-GT
In my MGB-GT, she's a runner now

Next up we have the Monkees version

MGB GT (by Peter Tork of the Monkees)

Lately my mind is drifting back
To former days that used to be.
I think about some folks I knew and of my MGB-GT.
People let me tell you that if I had to make a recipe
For fun in driving I would have to spell it MGB-GT.

Cruising, using, choosing it,
amusing myself without a care;
Striving, thriving, hot-rod driving,
not arriving anywhere.

Folks, this little car of mine
was like a kitten purring throatily.
Sometimes it even seemed to soar
into the heavens, my red MGB-GT.

Tooling, fueling my good feeling,
schooling me in ways to know
Soaring, flooring it, adoring it,
my little way to go.

Folks, this little car of mine
was like a kitten purring throatily.
Sometimes it even seemed to soar
into the heavens, my red MGB-GT.

But I, I learned you have to lose some things
before you treasure them,;that's how it goes.
And I, I didn't give time to my car
and lost my car to time; what did I know?

And so life carries on,
And lots of things are better now for me.
And yet I think back on those golden times
When I had my red MGB-GT.

Well Done PQD44. I didn't think it would be long before this question was answered.

To be pedantic Richard Thompson's MGBGT (apparently with a detachable hardtop!) was recorded after he left Fairport Convention***. Although there is a live Monkees version of MGBGT (see itunes) I was only aware of Peter Tork's solo version when I set the question.

*** I'm not counting any subsequent Fairport reunions for Copredy etc.

I believe this is the very generous (NOT!) payout to the ex rover workers.

Around 6500 workers have waited 7 years to find out they will receive a £3 payout, sharing just £22,000 between them.

Unless of course if the Pheonix four make personal donation....yeah, like that'll happen. they shafted the workers once, can't see them having a sudden change of heart after 7 years.......

I'm afraid you're correct Gary, this is the insulting amount offered to 6,500 workers of the former MG Rover :nonod: Click here for details

Quite some variety in the quiz today, :welcome: back Gadget, your turn

Been away for a bit, having real trouble thinking of some good questions, Things were getting soooo technical.

Try this one.
As a fan of British Touring cars I am pleased to see the return of an MG on the grid.

Taking a trip down memory lane Can you tell me:
1. The year of MG's Debut in British Touring cars
2.What was the bodytype
3.Who developed the car with MG.
4. How many rounds did they compete in during this first year
5. What was the Internal car designation number i.e EX?

good Luck
Gary

Wow a lot has been going on this Bank Holiday! I have much catching up to do!

So MG worked with West Surrey Racing to develop the EX 259 in 2001, based on the MG ZS, with a 2-litre KV6 engine developing 270bhp, weighing in at 1100kg.

At the British Touring Car Championship in October 2001, they competed in rounds 25 & 26 - Brands Hatch.

In the Sprint Race the weather/track conditions were 'Changeable'
MG ZS EX259 Car no 2, driven by Anthony Reid finished; Position 1st
MG ZS EX259 Car no 20, driven by Warren Hughes; Position Retired
Reid took the decision to remain on slick tyres when all other manufacturers opted to pit for wets. This outstanding result was achieved on what was only the third outing.

In the Feature Race the weather/track conditions were 'Wet'
MG ZS EX259 Car no 2, driven by Anthony Reid; Position D.N.F
MG ZS EX259 Car no 20, driven by Warren Hughes; Position D.N.F
Torrential rain and strong winds made driving conditions treacherous for the last round of the season. Spurred on by the earlier victory both cars looked most promising in the early laps with Hughes making a good start. Disappointing both cars were forced to retire with suspected electrical problems.

Hari you are quite correct with the information you provided, 2001 did see MG in the renamed (in 1987) British Touring Car Championship. The heritage of the series however dates back to 1957/58 and the British Saloon Car Championship.

If you take this continuous series then the inaugural season, 1958, would have to be considered the début for MG. The car then was a ZB Magnette driven by Alan Foster.

Well done Hari. Sorry for the delay in getting back to you all, I'm away in Switzerland this week.

I am going to give it to you, I had the number of rounds competed in as 3, 11-13 but I'll need to verify.

Seeing as you gave more than the required info the quiz is back in your hands.

MG competed in the last three meetings (11, 12 & 13) of the 2001 season, which were;

Rounds......Date ........ Venue

21 & 22......8/9 Sept ...Silverstone
23 & 24......22/23 Sept ...Donington Park
25 & 26......6/7 Oct ...Brands Hatch

Just as a matter of interest, Jason Plato won the title that season driving for Vauxhall in an Astra Coupe.

:drive: where we going next Hari?
