Posted 4 weeks 2 days ago #209162The spot/fogs are usually enabled by a positive from the head lamps, this is to prevent them being used without the head lamps being on.
Hence a relay. The switch wiring will include switch illumination when the side lights are on. The feed for warning light on the dash should link in to the loom at some point but as my supplementary illumination is custom I’m unable to help there, other than to assume it’s in the standard loom it integrates by design as you link the rest of the kit in.
I don’t recall there being any spot information on the wiring diagram & as I’m away I can only view it on my phone. Not good at all!
Is there not a diagram supplied?

Posted 4 weeks 2 days ago #209163I'll need some time.
The small cube like black box you refer to as the unit is actually the relay, this device acts as an electrically operated switch, it saves having to run all the current required for the lights through the switch which would wear out the contacts of the switch in no time, it is good practice to use these.
Yet again I'll need a little time to come up with what goes where and the same for the rear fogs which I didn't realise you were also fitting.
So to some up you seem to need help with all the wires not just the two mentioned in your earlier posts.....yeah?

Posted 4 weeks 2 days ago #209167SO Cobber sir - no only fitting from spotlights thats all. It was a wiring loom 'kit' that I purchased from ebay as I thought it would be 'simple' to fit lol OOPS!
No kind of instructions sadly and so I am rather blind and I can't get hold of the seller and tbf I had purchased these ages ago. The fact I now have the whole dash out, I really can't be bothered to put it all back together until I can get these bloomin' spots/fogs wired in lol
Thank you for the rely info thats all really interesting.
I shall await for all of your response on what to do next then. I presume with all the wires (the 5 from the back of the green switch connector) and the positive and negative, all need to be directly attached/piggybacked into ones currently in the main car loom that spreads off to all other switches etc?! I will wait patiently until you guys basically tell me what to do, because I am so so lost with this and again, i'm really thankful for all of your help

Posted 4 weeks 2 days ago #209171The factory set up is quite complicated and runs through the Body ECU which may require activating.
What you have dosen't look like a factory fog light kit as the wiring colours are wrong, and the rear fog light switch connector plug is the wrong colour (it should be blue) so I suspect you have some sort of aftermarket kit which may not require connecting to the Body ECU, which might be a good thing.......BUT and it's a very big but, bigger than a fat man's arse!
Is that from my vantage point on the other side of the world I can't see and feel exactly what you have got in your hot little hands!
Were it was sitting here in front of me I'd be able to figure it out PDQ (pretty damned quick)
Are they actually fog lights or driving/spot lights? There is a huge difference between the functions and applications of the two, the terms are often mistakenly interchanged.
Maybe you should post some pix of the lights themselves, so as we might be able to say what you have.
It was kind of Ol' Mate from Ebay to sell you that kit without any destuctions!
Maybe someone on here has dealt with one of Ol' mates kits before, if so hopefully they can enlighten us as to how it's meant to go.
I'm sorry but I can't really be of much help, If the car was here I could rig up the wiring in any number of ways to get it working but that would involve a bit of trial and error.
I will however on your behalf ask my tame auto electrician mate for his thoughts on the matter, though I suspect he will echo what I've said. And I never know when he will darken my door step. So it might take a while.
So you are going to need to enlist some local help, maybe if you posted your appoximate location on here, there might be a menber with the skill set to help nearby. Failing that you might need to handball it to an auto elecrician to nut it out.

Posted 4 weeks 1 day ago #209172I did manage to find the following diagram online which I presume I can use as the correct guide to place the wires into the back of the green connector to place into the spotlight switch? The question would then be what wires from the main loom I piggyback them into? Also where the two separate wires connect to also that are coming from my kit loom? I will take a pic of the main loom in the car to see if that would help you to (hopefully!) help me work out which wires are which

Posted 4 weeks 1 day ago #209175yeah there is a trick to getting you attached pix to show properly, I think you have enough on your plate for now, with out that adding to the confusion.Hopefully you can see the last two pics - they are viewing as attachments for me and not in the message body...not too sure why thats happened?!
We’ll worry about that later. You need to find some where handy to ground the earth wire to the body, there will be a screw that you can use. Doesn’t matter which one, so long as it makes a good groun. As for a power feed you can either go for an always live which means you can take it from any plain brown wire that has some useful diameter or if you only want it live when the ignition is on you probably need to go from one of the circuits at the fuse box that turn on from the ignition switch
by the way I need to be pedantic here, if your lights are the standard MG fare, they are not spot lights, they are fog lights.
the difference being fog lights have a short low cut broad beam pattern which is to sneak under the fog without reflecting back at you and dazzling you they are also not meant to to dazzle on coming drivers, whereas spot/ driving lights a
have a long range “spot” beam.that reaches beyond your head lights for extra range, these will dazzle on coming traffic if you don’t dip them and if you try to use them in fog the light will reflect straight back at you, so you will be dazzled. This is an important distinction when wiring these up as with spotlights you need to wire then so your dip switch turns them off with your main beams,
with fog lights they can be wired a couple of ways traditionally they really should be wired so as when they are switched on the headlights are off but a lot of cars these days allow both headlights and fog lights to run at the same time, so as the foglights can provide broader illumination around town this is useful for keeping an eye out for idiot joggers, nuisance cyclists, wayward pedestrians, silly dogs, and rampant kids etc.

Posted 4 weeks 1 day ago #209176As such, legally they should only be able to be used on dipped beam.
As Cobber says, if you only want them to work when you flick the switch then what Cobber has just posted is all you need. If you want them to be in tandem with dipped beam and go off when you switch to high beam, to be legal, then they need to get the switched live from the dipped beam Live.
I have not had my car long and I have no idea where it is in the loom. This is what Cobber is trying to find out for you.
BUT..I have seen so many cars take the switched live from the back of the dipped beam headlight. They piggy back a connector to the live at the dipped beam bulb and that goes to the live on your switch. Then you can only have the fog lamps on when you are on dipped beam because the live to your switch is cut when you go to full beam.
Spotlights are different. You want the switch to bring them on any time you turn them on and with main beam you light up the road!
I believe yours are Fog lights.
As Cobber says, it's a very easy job for any auto electrician.
Good luck.

Posted 4 weeks 1 day ago #209177OK so are you referring to the earth wire that is under the hood (blue in colour)?
I will go take a pic of the front fog/spots now and post up!

Posted 4 weeks 1 day ago #209179Here are the British standard for wiring colours, note there can be variations due to idiots who worked on the car may have used whatever they had laying about.
