The Austin Healey Sprite, replaced the famous Frogeye Sprite.PQD44 wrote: Thanks for that one David.
OK Bryan it's your turn to frozen out of a challenge, this would not prove a challenge for your encyclopaedic knowledge of all things MG related, so come on T-Bar viewers of this thread time for you to make a move.
Name the car pictured, it's famous predecessor and the MG links, good luck
BTW the location associated can be given and brownie points will be awarded for a specific location, but it's not an essential requirement as this is no longer a Guess where it is thread. :silly:
Austin Healey Sprite had the same engine and other parts as the MG Midget, and ended up as virtually the same car except for Badging.

Well done David :woohoo:
The MG Midget Mk1 was basically just a slightly more expensive re-badged version of the Austin-Healey Sprite MKII and retained the quarter-elliptic sprung rear axle from the original Sprite. The engine was a 948 cc A-Series with twin SU carburettors producing 46 bhp at 3000 rpm.
The two were so inter-related they became known affectionately as Spridgets. The Sprite was designed by the Donald Healey Motor Company, which received a royalty payment from the manufacturers BMC. The Sprite was made at the MG factory at Abingdon and it was inevitable that the success of the design would spawn an MG version, reviving the popular pre-war model name.
David I now look forward to your next slant on the MG, Guess what, where, when, how, who, location challenge

The Austin-Healey Sprite, known here as the “Frogeye” and "bugeye" in the US. Everything about the Frogeye gives an impression of fun, the Sprite takes us back to a time when Britain made stuff. This was one of the many small, affordable sports cars we produced that, customers were told, “a chap could store in his bike shed”. All you needed was £669 and a glint in your eye.
Those smiling eyes - gawping headlights fixed on the bonnet - were a cost-cutting accident, like so much British car design. As on the later Porsche 928 they were meant to be retractable, facing skyward when not in use, until the BMC penny pinching accountants said “No”. The Sprite wasn’t exactly over-burdened with extras. Not only were there no door handles, you reach inside to open it, there wasn’t even a boot lid, requiring owners to tilt the back seat and rummage in the dark to find the spare wheel.
Ah they just don't make 'em like they used to.

That was a clever one David, had me fooled for a while, I was convinced this was some sort of fifties single seater racer BTW are those lights in the grill the source of inspiration for yours?
